Teaching & the Importance of Play

My apologies for not being having updated this site for a season, I’ve been steadily working on a new site in conjunction with the Center for Symbolic Studies. The project is not yet open for public, but will definitely be a great online resource for finding myths corresponding to the themes, motifs and symbols you might be interested in.

Here is a phenomenal talk by Stuart Brown talking about the origins of play in teaching, synchronizing the right brains and how the play impulse can be even deeper than the predatory stare of a polar bear among other things.

Sir Ken Robinson on education and creativity

Working with mythology and education, I’m doing quite a lot of research for a book and found this video which I’d recommend you all view:

Lecture in New Paltz, NY: Myth for Fun, Myth for Blood

Myth for Fun, Myth for Blood: Practical Uses of Myths and Stories in our Lives and the World.

With Richard Schwab, Director of MonoMyth.org

JOSEPH CAMPBELL MYTHOLOGICAL ROUNDTABLE
At the Center for Symbolic Studies
Sunday, October 19, 2008, 2 - 5 p.m.

Myth for fun, Myth for blood: Practical Uses of Myths and Stories in our Lives and the World.

In this lecture, we will discuss myths and stories and their more obscure uses. Beginning with simple amusement to using myths as doorways to  understanding ourselves, lubricating communication in relationships, and ways of using mythology in work (example: planning a software design project using mythological models.)

Expanding beyond that we find ourselves with mythology in the world. We’ll approach how myths are used to heal, inspire, brainwash, unite people and inflict wounds in the physical world and world psyche.

This section will hopefully have time to go over a run down which myths and stories we can use to help work through mass psychological wounds.  Not only wisdoms lost by our society but the vessels:
metaphors, imagery and symbols which can be used to tap the collective unconscious.

The finale will be the demonstration of a new practical guide/method you can use to unravel myths, be they fairy tales, dreams or your favorite songs, films  and art. With paying heed to your own mind’s eye as a glimpse into your unconscious, you might be able to see a new way to help reframe, communicate and thus heal issues in yourself, the community and the world.

New Version of “The Hero with a Thousand Faces”

I’ve been gifted a copy of the new “Hero with a Thousand Faces” the book which coined the term ‘MonoMyth’ and I am pleased to say I am very thrilled by it and wanted to give it our fullest recommendation.

The Hero with a Thousand Faces Third Edition

The Hero with a Thousand Faces Third Edition

Of course, as you might be able to see, I am a large enthusiast of charts and imagery which fully adorn this, now Third Edition. The selected works of art are amazing in providing examples, reinforcing key elements and providing mysterious and mesmerizing symbols to tap into that transcendent sense of wonder. A great mid ground between the eye candy of The Power of Myth and the brilliant wisdoms of the original work.

Recommendations on Teaching Myth

The School of Athens - fresco by Raffaello Sanzio (w)It has been very busy of late as we’ve gotten many requests by teachers to help provide some aid in ways to convey ideas to students. With such interest it seems sensible to make an attempt to provide some materials for teachers as recommendations by ourselves and others on curriculum, lesson plans and stories which might be of use to everyone.

To see how many people might be interested in this, please fill out the form below so we can see what interest there is.
